Kosher kitchen design
A kosher kitchen design starts with the meat and dairy zones, the second sink, the Shabbat corner and the Pesach storage, then the kitchen is designed around them.

A kosher kitchen design keeps meat and dairy apart: two sinks, separate counters or zones, and often separate dishwashers and ovens. Moriah Veg plans those zones, plus space for Pesach and Shabbat, before choosing a single cabinet front.
“Separate sinks for washing dishes and preparing foods are recommended.”
The kosher kitchen layout, item by item
| Item | What families usually plan |
|---|---|
| Sinks | One meat sink and one dairy sink |
| Counters | A meat side and a dairy side, sometimes split by the sink run or an island |
| Dishwashers | Two, one for meat dishes and one for dairy dishes, if the space and budget allow |
| Cooking | Two cooktops, or one with a separate dairy burner; ovens set aside for meat, dairy or pareve |
| Storage | Separate cabinets for meat, dairy and pareve, plus a closed store for Pesach dishes |
| Shabbat | A counter spot and outlet for a hot plate (plata) and urn, often on a timer |
Every family keeps kosher a little differently. Ask your rabbi about your own practice; the design then follows it.
Shabbat appliances
Many ovens and fridges have a Sabbath mode. It changes how the appliance behaves, but it does not make every use permitted.
“The Sabbath Mode feature does not grant us permission to turn appliances on or off during Shabbos.”
That is why the plan marks where the plata, urn and timers go, instead of leaving them to an extension cord.
Planning for Pesach
- A tall closed cabinet or a separate storage room for Pesach dishes
- Counters and a sink that can be covered or kashered
- In larger homes, a second small Pesach kitchen
Kosher kitchens in Israeli apartments
Israeli kitchens are often smaller than American ones, and a new-build kitchen comes with fixed plumbing points. Planning two sinks and two dishwashers early, before the developer's deadline or before demolition, is what makes them fit.
Questions about kosher kitchens
Do I need two of everything?
No. Separate sinks, counters and dishes are standard. Two ovens, two dishwashers or two cooktops depend on your practice, your space and your budget.
Can a small kitchen be fully kosher?
Yes. The layout does the work: clear meat and dairy sides and enough storage for each set of dishes.
